Detroit police have issued over 700 citations, shut down more than 24 parties

More than 24 parties in Detroit have been shut down by police as officers work to enforce Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's stay-home order, according to statistics posted by the Detroit Police Department.

In a Facebook post Friday afternoon, the department thanked Detroit residents for helping officials ensure the public is adhering to the governor's public safety executive order by being the "eyes and ears of our community."

Over 10,631 locations have been checked by Detroit police, with 736 citations issued and 1,614 warnings.

Detroit has emerged as a national hotspot for the novel coronavirus. As of Friday, 7,414 cases were reported in the city of Detroit with the death toll reaching 582, according to data from the state health department.

The department has also shut down 27 businesses that were found to be in violation of the governor's orders.

This comes as Whitmer said Friday she hopes for some relaxing of the stay-home order on May 1.

COVID-19 has claimed the lives of 2,227 Michiganders as of Friday, with 30,023 cases reported in the state.
