We are still very much in the midst of the pandemic, but as vaccines are rolled out, countries are beginning to open up again. However, to ensure that they don’t encounter new clusters and outbreaks, some of the rules implemented in various parts of the world are that people need to be fully vaccinated.

To prove this, we’ve seen governments create “vaccine passports” that are designed to show proof that the person has been vaccinated. It is a good idea on paper, but it seems that some of these apps could definitely use a security upgrade. This is because in a recent interview with Radio-Canada, an anonymous hacker claimed to have hacked Quebec’s vaccination passport app.

According to the hacker, as a result of the attack, they were able to generate false proof of vaccination for non-existent citizens. This means that not only will people be able to obscure their identities, but it will also make it seem like they have been vaccinated and will be accorded the privileges of those who have.

Deputy Minister for Government Digital Transformation Éric Caire has since downplayed the severity of the app’s weakness that the hacker had exploited. However, it is still somewhat concerning that an app as important as this can be hacked, so hopefully this will prompt other governments around the world to take a closer look at their own  apps.
