Nancy Pelosi Calls for “An Intervention” to Address Trump’s “Erratic Behavior”

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is pulling no punches when it comes to President Donald Trump‘s decision to call off COVID-19 stimulus negotiations. During a Wednesday morning appearance on The View, Pelosi insisted that the president’s “erratic behavior” must be addressed, and she called for Trump administration officials to stage “an intervention” on behalf of the nation. “There are enablers around the president who really should know better,” said the Democratic party leader. “The Republicans in Congress have enabled so much of this to happen.”

In her first televised interview since Trump instructed congressional Republicans to shut down coronavirus stimulus negotiations on Tuesday afternoon, Pelosi dragged the president for making a “terrible mistake” and turning his back on struggling Americans. “He walked away from the opportunity to crush the virus … he walked away from the opportunity for putting money in the pockets of the American people,” she said. “All he’s ever wanted in the negotiation was to send out a check with his name printed on it. Forget about the virus. Forget about our heroes. Forget about our children.”

When Ana Navarro asked why Trump has suddenly changed his tune on stimulus talks — on Saturday, he tweeted that “our great USA wants & needs stimulus” — Pelosi said that such behavior is “true to form” for him. “The president has always had erratic behavior. Right now it’s very, very dangerous because he knows the danger of the virus [but] he’s in denial, as he was right from the state,” said the speaker. “Denial, delay, distortion, and look what has happened to our country.”

Pelosi added that some “healthcare providers” believe that Trump’s behavior is being affected by the steroids he’s taking to treat COVID-19, but she was careful not to say whether she agrees with these doctors. “I don’t know, but there are those healthcare providers who say that,” she said. “Also, if you have the coronavirus, it has an impact, as well. So the combination is something that should be viewed.”

Later, Pelosi seemed to double down when she called upon GOP leadership to step in to prevent the president from spreading misinformation about the virus. “We should be concerned because of the virus and its viciousness, but also because of the denial the president is in,” she told The View hosts. “There’s something wrong about the disconnect between what the president’s responsibilities are and what’s happening.”

“That’s why I think that there has to be an intervention in terms of the people around him to say, ‘For the good of the country, so that no more people get infected and die, we have to have a plan that recognizes the danger,'” said Pelosi. “The danger struck right into the Oval Office, to the president of the United States. We pray for him, for his family, for his workforce, but we also pray for the over 200,000 people who died and their families, and the 7 and a half million people who are infected.”
